Cable companies drive boom in fiber-optic cable business
Cable companies are building national fiber-optic networks as part of an effort to roll out VOD and other services. Cox Communications and Time Warner are laying their own fiber and are leasing capacity from telecommunications companies, while Comcast recently announced it would lease 19,000 miles of fiber from Level 3 Communications to link together 95% of its cable systems in a $100 million deal.
