Symbian and Microsoft historically have not been the bets of friends, but Symbian's new plan to license Microsoft's Exchange Server ActiveSync represents a new direction in their relationship. The companies are likely to use the new arrangement to develop smart phones capable of delivering services similar to those offered by Research in Motion's BlackBerry e-mail device.
