Alcatel-Lucent awarded $400 million network contract
Alcatel-Lucent has won a contract for an IP-based, next-generation CDMA and GSM network from Reliance Communications. Under the contract, valued at more than $400 million, Alcatel-Lucent will upgrade Reliance's CDMA and GSM network with new mobile switching centers and base stations. Light Reading Mobile (7/11)
Nextlink creates "largest broadband wireless access network in U.S."
XO Communications and its subsidiary Nextlink Wireless have announced that they have deployed broadband wireless in an additional 25 metropolitan areas across the U.S., including "large markets" in Texas, Colorado and Pennsylvania. According to Nextlink President and CEO Robert Beran, his company "operates the nation's largest broadband wireless access network in the U.S." RCR Wireless News (7/11)
Telus launches EVDO network in British Columbia, Alberta

Kuwait planning third national mobile network
A company being set up to run Kuwait's third mobile-phone network will be held 24% by the government, with 26% offered to international investors and the remaining 50% floated on the local stock market, Kuwait's Investment Authority said. cellular-news (U.K.) (7/12)
Shaw Communications plans stock split

NTT DoCoMo, AT&T to bring 3G to Hawaii

South Korean handset production drops 20%

Nokia adds Skype functionality

Study: Most use cells for calls, text, not games or video
Only 5% of mobile users watch videos on their cell phones, according to a new study from Interpublic Group's Initiative. The research also showed that 18% of consumers have checked their e-mail, surfed the Web or downloaded a game on their mobile device. Turk Telecom plans $3.4 billion IP network, rural broadband
Turk Telekom has announced a three-year, $3.4 billion plan to roll out an IP network and a second plan to provide rural broadband in Turkey. EU wants to consolidate telecom regulation
