Sprint executive calls for end to device subsidies
In an address at NXTcomm on Thursday, Sprint President of 4G Barry West lauded WiMAX's cost efficiency, but he said end-user costs still needed to be driven lower. Toward that end, West called for an end to device subsidies, which he said forced carriers to use long-term contracts. West said that consumers would be so attracted to mobile WiMAX devices such as laptops and portable media players that carriers would not need to pay for them. Wireless Review (Chicago) (6/21)

Alcatel-Lucent talks convergence
Alcatel-Lucent said consumers were looking for a blended service experience, not just a monolithic service experience. "Enterprise networks are becoming so complex that it opens up advanced communication opportunities. ... Verizon announces new business FMC services
Verizon Communications has introduced three new fixed-mobile convergence services: Wireless Office, PBX Mobile Extension and Mobile Conference Connection. Analysis: Will Vodafone sell its portion of Verizon Wireless?
U.K.-based Vodafone has until Aug. 9 to decide if it will end its joint venture with Verizon Communications by selling back its 45% stake in Verizon Wireless. Vodafone is under pressure from shareholders to make the move, which would give Verizon full control over the wireless service, the second-largest in the U.S., but the European operator has shown no interest in letting go of the stake. Report: VOD strongest area for TV growth
Video-on-demand is expected to grow nearly 20% per year to become a $4.2 billion annual business by 2011, according to a new study by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The study predicts that the entire U.S. TV distribution business will experience 5.4% growth in the next four years, with subscription TV leading the way. Column: Branding won't matter if product doesn't wow consumers
Research which shows that consumers are focused more on the iPhone's features than its Apple moniker proves that branding means little if the product isn't a good one, according to Marc E. Fring expands service to Windows Mobile users
PC-mobile phone-application firm fring is adding all Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0 series devices to its mobile VoIP community. Fring enables Windows Mobile users to make use of integrated VoIP and a multiple IM experience to enable calls, chat and real-time presence via their cell phone's Internet capabilities, according to fring CEO Avi Shechter. EC greenlights NBCU-News Corp. Internet-TV venture
