Communications companies form network security alliance
A group of global communications companies including BT, Cisco Systems and EarthLink today are expected to announce a plan to begin sharing information about network-based hacker attacks. It's decision time for MCI
MCI's board could decide as early as today whether to choose Qwest Communications' latest takeover offer, or stick with the original plan to merge with Verizon Communications. Verizon would have five days to raise its bid if MCI reverses its course and picks Qwest.   The Wall Street Journal (3/28) 

Huawei seeks to clarify report
Huawei Technologies on Friday sought to distance itself from a China Daily report quoting a Huwaei executive saying the company was seeking partnerships with Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies. A Huawei spokeswoman said the China Daily article contained "several misinterpretations," although she declined to say what those misinterpretations were. Huawei neither confirmed nor denied talks with Nortel or Lucent.   Light Reading (3/25) 

WiMAX startup raises Vonage's ire
Clearwire Corp., a new wireless broadband venture by telecom entrepreneur Craig McCaw, says it is reserving the right to prohibit the use of a variety of outside broadband applications including VoIP to preserve bandwidth for its subscribers. The policy has drawn the attention of Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron, who has been vocal about ISPs' policies toward VoIP providers.   TechWeb Network (3/25) 

NTP pursues wireless e-mail patent disputes
NTP, the Arlington, Va.-based company that recently won $450 million in a wireless e-mail patent dispute with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, said it is talking to other companies about similar patent issues.   eWeek.com (3/28)

FCC backs BellSouth in stand-alone DSL ruling
The FCC on Friday suspended regulations in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Louisiana requiring BellSouth and other regional phone companies to sell DSL as a stand-alone service.
