Microsoft begins VoIP beta
Microsoft has released a beta version of Office Communications Server 2007 to about 2,500 IT professionals. The voice-server software allows users to place VoIP calls from Office Communicator 2007 and is part of the company's plan to offer businesses a unified communications infrastructure. Skype to charge for phone service that is now free
Skype Technologies said effective Jan. 1 that it would charge $30 a year for unlimited Internet phone calls made to landline and mobile phones within North America. Sprint finishes Revision A rollout for 2006

Vodafone Italia, Sky Italia sign mobile TV deal
Vodafone Group's Italian unit has announced a new mobile digital TV service that will offer programs from News Corp.'s Sky Italia satellite broadcaster on Vodafone mobile phones. More than 75% of Web users are on broadband

SMS wildly successful, but successor being sought
An estimated 936 billion SMS messages were sent in 2005, and this number may reach 2.3 trillion by 2010, research firm Gartner predicts. "Nobody could have could have predicted the phenomenal success of SMS and the race is on to find its successor," said Gartner analyst Nick Ingelbrecht. Michigan moves to expand video competition
Michigan lawmakers passed a bill Tuesday that will place all video providers under a statewide franchise system.
