Microsoft, Yahoo! to merge IM networks
In a move that will transform the landscape of online instant messaging, Microsoft and Yahoo! have agreed to combine their IM networks, allowing users of both services to communicate with each other over IM or VoIP. Sycamore turns a profit
Sycamore Networks reported a $1.4 million net profit for its fourth quarter -- its first profitable quarter since 2000. Global Crossing cleared to offer voice service in Mexico
Global Crossing said the Mexican government approved its bid to add VoIP to its data services package, giving the telco clearance to sell voice services directly to businesses and carriers. The Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones (10/11)   
Pac-West broadens its horizons
Pac-West Telecom announced plans to expand its wholesale voice and data business from the West Coast to a national customer base. The move will put Pac-West in direct competition with companies such as Level 3 Communications and XO Communications. Telephony Online (10/12)   
Leap Wireless signs deal with Nortel
Leap Wireless has entered into a $130 million contract with Nortel Networks to buy wireless network equipment from the Canadian gear maker. Under the deal, Leap subsidiary Cricket Communications will buy $90.5 million worth of equipment from Nortel, while Alaska Native Broadband 1 License, a Leap joint venture, will spend $39.5 million. Linksys unveils Skype cordless phone

Microsoft settles with RealNetworks
Microsoft agreed to pay RealNetworks $460 million to settle an antitrust lawsuit dating back to December 2003 and will also pay $301 million to promote and distribute RealNetwork's music subscription service, Rhapsody. RealNetworks' claim against Microsoft was based on the software giant's practice of bundling its Media Player with its Windows software suite.
