Alcatel to buy Nortel's 3G assets

DT cuts prices, offers new bundled packages

Deutsche Telekom said it plans to cut prices by up to 30% and start offering triple-play packages as part of an effort to fend off new challengers. Cable group among top bidders in airwaves auction

A consortium of cable companies has bid $2.3 billion for 132 of 1,122 FCC licenses -- including ones in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. The top offers from SpectrumCo, a partnership controlled by Comcast with minority stakes from Time Warner Inc. and Cox Communications, would allow its members to build their own wireless network.   The Philadelphia Inquirer/Bloomberg (9/1)

Verizon expands FiOS in Massachusetts

College sporting events now available on broadband

CBS Corp.'s CSTV Networks Inc. is offering live streams of football and other sporting events from dozens of colleges and universities. Some schools will screen their events for free, while others will charge a monthly fee of $4.95 to $9.95 for an "All-Access" broadband channel; a package deal, providing access to more than 100 schools, costs $14.95 a month or $99.95 for a year.   NYTimes.com/Associated Press (8/31)

Philips phone lets Skype users make calls sans computer

IRS details rules for phone tax refund
