IPTV may be springboard for telcos
IPTV may provide the foothold telcos need in their battle with MSOs, and its bandwidth efficiency may ease transition to on-demand programming, according to Arlen Communications president Gary Arlen. SBC Communications, BellSouth and Verizon Communications each will launch unique versions of IPTV systems nationwide as early as this year.   Wired (8/2005)

BellSouth simplifies DSL pricing
BellSouth said it plans to charge one rate for its DSL offerings as part of a plan to simplify pricing for customers. The move means the telco no longer will offer short-term introductory rates. "BellSouth believes that, for many people, simplicity and convenience are essential when choosing a high-speed Internet service," said Keith Cowan, president of marketing and product management.   InformationWeek (8/2) 

Cable targets small business

Motorola, Nortel fund Wi-Fi company
Motorola and Nortel Networks have invested undisclosed sums of money in Trapeze Networks, a startup that makes wireless switches designed to facilitate the management of Wi-Fi networks.   CNET (8/2) 

Sirius announces push for 3M subscribers
Sirius Satellite Radio CEO Mel Karmazin says the company this quarter doubled its advertising revenue from last quarter, and that it has raised the bar for subscriber growth from 2.7 million to 3 million by the year's end. Broadband penetration to reach 62% by 2010, study says
Sixty-two percent of U.S. homes will have some form of broadband access by 2010, more than doubling last year's level of 29%, according to a study by Forrester Research. In addition, 37% of homes will use a DVR by 2010, Forrester predicts.   CNET (8/2),   The Washington Post/Reuters (8/3)

Court issues new ruling in RIM patent case
A federal appeals court yesterday issued a new opinion in a patent infringement case against Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry device. The decision scales back a previous ruling in a case that found RIM guilty of violating numerous wireless e-mail patents held by NTP. Analysts said the opinion could slow down legal proceedings against RIM and therefore delay a possible injunction that would halt BlackBerry sales in the U.S.   eWeek.com/Reuters (8/2),   InformationWeek/Associated Press (8/2) 

Nextel seeks e911 delay
Nextel Communications is seeking a waiver from an FCC requirement to activate e911 service for 95% of handsets by the end of this year. Nextel reportedly is struggling to meet the deadline because of burdens associated with its merger with Sprint.
