It is hard to believe that 2008 is all but over. Looking back at the news generated by the telecom industry, it is amazing how much has happened in 12 short months! Let's take a moment to reflect on the past year in this USTelecom dailyLead two-part, year-end special report. Today, Part I highlights the most important trends, stories and events of the past year. Part II, which will hit your inbox Thursday, provides a glimpse into what's in store for 2009.
This year continued the momentum generated in 2007 when it comes to video, as many telecoms made further inroads in the space in terms of market rollouts, customer additions and content, including HD and deals with providers. Broadband, unified communications, femtocells, WiMAX and everything IP were among the hot buzzwords in 2008 as companies explored ways to leverage these technologies to better serve customers.
This year's presidential election showed candidates taking advantage of telecom-powered technologies such as social media and text messaging as never before, and President-elect Barack Obama seems committed to making technology issues a key part of his administration.
USTelecom worked to keep its members in the know through its NXTcomm show in Las Vegas and the Executive Business Forum in San Jose, Calif., as well as a strong menu of webinars covering everything from today's cutting-edge technologies and products to how to implement IPTV, including getting or creating content.
Yes, it has been a busy year! Let's take a look back at the top stories from 2008.
