Analysis: Big changes lie ahead for telecom sector
Recent mergers in the telecom sector -- most notably the Cingular-AT&T Wireless and Sprint-Nextel mergers -- may touch off a new wave of technological innovation that likely will blur the lines between wireless and wireline communications, according to BusinessWeek. Qwest gears up for residential VoIP launch
Qwest Communications will face some stiff competition from other telcos, cable operators and pure-play VoIP providers when it launches its own residential VoIP service this year. Mobile phones aid tsunami relief efforts
Mobile phone companies including Telecom Italia Mobile, Telefonica's Telfonica Moviles and Hong Kong operator 3 have launched services that enable their subscribers to make donations to the tsunami relief effort via text messages.   The Wall Street Journal (1/3) 

Analysis: Broadband penetration to grow in 2005
Broadband Daily predicts that the high-speed Internet will reach 33% of U.S. homes by the end of 2005, up from 29% at the end of 2004. TiVoToGo to launch today; DVR technology sends files to PCs
DVR maker TiVo is set to launch its long-awaited mobile service today. TiVoToGo will allow subscribers to download recorded programs to PCs and laptops -- untethering TV viewing from TV. "It lays the foundation of moving content out of the living room,'' a TiVo spokeswoman said. New IPv6 network to link universities in China
The China Education and Research Network Information Center said it is launching an IPv6 network designed to connect 25 universities in 20 cities across the country. Ruling a blow to Dutch telco KPN
Dutch cable operator United Pan-Europe Communications is not required to give telecom operator KPN access to its cable network in the Netherlands, communications and postal regulator Opta has ruled. KPN had wanted to use UPC's lines to offer video and audio services, but Opta said the two companies must go back to the bargaining table.   The Wall Street Journal (1/3)
