A look back: The 48th International Paris Air Show 2009 |
| The 48th International Paris Air Show 2009 took place June 15 to 21 at Le Bourget Exhibition Centre and marked 100 years of technological innovation in aeronautics and space conquest with an event that continues to look to the future of the industry. The Aerospace Industries Association once again led the U.S. aerospace and defense presence at the Paris Air Show, one of the premier industry events in the world. More than 500 exhibiting companies -- including many AIA members -- from 37 countries converged at Le Bourget.
AIA played a principal role in the assortment of meetings, exhibits, receptions and networking opportunities that highlighted the Paris Air Show. - Raytheon will expand within drone market, CEO says
Raytheon intends to focus on boosting sales of pilotless aircraft to the U.S. and its allies, according to a company executive attending the Paris Air Show. "We want to come at the market from every angle we can, not only sensors," CEO William Swanson said. He noted that the company's goal is to expand the range of equipment it makes in the drone market, which is expected to increase to $8.7 billion annually within 10 years. Arizona Daily Star (Tucson)

- Fuel concerns weighed heavily at Paris Air Show
Fuel economy was a hot topic at the Paris Air Show last week, with aircraft manufacturers seeking to wow buyers with the latest green technology. "Fuel consumption has always been one of the main criteria," for airliners, notes the deputy chief for environmental issues at Airbus. That has led to increasing use of lightweight composites in newer models as well as research into biofuels. Google/Agence France-Presse

- Many companies consider UAVs the future of defense
Defense companies displayed dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles this year at the Paris Air Show. Boeing, for instance, highlighted its ScanEagle surveillance aircraft, which has been used in Iraq and Afghanistan. The company also announced a new unmanned division at the air show. Meanwhile, it faces competition from Northrop Grumman, which makes a variety of UAVs. The Seattle Times

- Discount carriers give Airbus a boost at Paris Air Show
Many of the orders announced by jetmaker Airbus at the Paris Air Show were from small, low-cost carriers taking advantage of the downturn in the market for jetliners. Airbus announced 112 orders at the air show, compared with just two announced by Boeing. Boeing officials said the company's policy is to disclose orders when they are placed instead of saving them to announce at air shows. Bloomberg Businessweek

- Jetmakers take low-key approach to Paris Air Show
Boeing and Airbus announced far fewer orders this year at the Paris Air Show than they have at previous air shows, observers said. They also noted that Middle Eastern airlines booked fewer orders, suggesting that lower oil prices are weakening demand for jetliners in the region. Meanwhile, engine makers effectively demonstrated new technology at the show, while defense firms such as Northrop Grumman showcased their technology and weapons. - Suppliers ask if jetmakers can maintain production rates
Suppliers attending the Paris Air Show say they are skeptical about the number of narrow-body jetliners that Boeing and Airbus say they will build. One industry observer said he expects production cuts as the economic downturn becomes more severe. However, other suppliers are confident that Boeing's backlog will allow it to maintain current production rates. AviationWeek.com

 | U.S. aerospace exports totaled $20.7 billion in the first quarter of 2009. Imports totaled $6 billion, resulting in an aerospace trade surplus of $14.7 billion -- a substantial, positive contribution to the overall U.S. trade balance. Trade activity was fairly flat for the quarter, with exports rising a modest 1.1% from the previous quarter. However, when viewed within the context of the overall economy and with trade volumes of other sectors falling precipitously, the aerospace industry is certainly holding its own. Even so, indications are that the strong growth experienced in recent years may be moderating. Looking year-over-year, U.S. aerospace exports are down
nearly 16%.
