Texas grants first state-issued cable franchise
Guadalupe Valley Communication Systems, a subsidiary of Guadalupe Valley Telephone Cooperative, has won Texas' first state-issued cable and video franchise, Light Reading reports. Verizon Communications and Grande Communications also have applied for franchises in the state. Light Reading (10/5)

Sprint Nextel sues Vonage
Sprint Nextel filed a lawsuit against Vonage Holdings and Voiceglo Holdings, a unit of Theglobe.com, alleging the VoIP providers infringed seven Sprint patents for transmitting phone calls over data networks. Covad snaps up NextWeb

Denmark's TDC gets another offer
A group of four U.S. and U.K. private equity firms has made an offer for TDC, Denmark's dominant phone company. The offer is thought to be in the $12 billion range, which makes it comparable to a rival bid by another group of firms. Telefonica taps Nominum for DNS
Spain's Telefonica said it plans to begin using the Foundation Caching Name Server from Nominum, which also claims several other large customers including BT Group, Colt Telecom Group and Telecom Italia. The Spanish carrier has been using open source software BIND but said the upgrade was necessary to accommodate increased domain lookup requests from more IP traffic. WiMAX holds promise, but obstacles remain
A new breed of companies are betting that WiMAX will become a popular alternative to existing high-speed Internet options. But while the technology is getting support from some big names, companies with previous experience running fixed wireless networks say WiMAX may only get a piece of a growing market that includes technologies such as EV-DO. New research expected to be released to today at Penn State University says hackers could disable a mobile phone network by sending text messages into the network at a rate of 165 messages a second. Alcatel announces "universal" optical metro switch

Qwest adds BellSouth to Networx bid team
