Comcast will lease 19,000 miles of fiber-optic lines from Level 3 Communications, as the cable company builds a nationwide network for TV, telephone and data services. Comcast puts the initial cost of the network, which will connect 95% of Comcast's cable systems, at $100 million over 20 years. Two of the largest cable operators in the U.S. have passed significant milestones in their efforts to expand into telephone services. Time Warner Cable expects to end the year with more than 200,000 customers for its Internet phone services. Liberty Media, the investment group controlled by cable mogul John Malone, is negotiating to sell its stake in News Corp, Liberty's CEO said. Last month, Liberty Media announced plans to increase its holdings in News Corp., which triggered speculation of a takeover battle. Nextel Communications will offer priority connections to government officials and law enforcement officers in times of emergency by routing specially authorized calls when circuits are congested.
