| | Japan's a VoIP-over-DSL hotbed
Softbank's Yahoo! Broadband service can claim about 4 million of the world's 5 million VoIP-over-DSL subscribers, according to a report by research firm Point Topic. The report says the technology will grow fast in the U.S. once telcos and cablers expand their current VoIP offerings. Light Reading (12/8)

| | Comcast leases 19,000 miles of fiber for VoIP, TV, data network
Comcast will lease 19,000 miles of fiber-optic lines from Level 3 Communications, as the cable company builds a nationwide network for TV, telephone and data services. Comcast puts the initial cost of the network, which will connect 95% of Comcast's cable systems, at $100 million over 20 years. In addition to enabling the creation of a long-distance voice and data network, the lines are expected to increase Comcast's VOD capabilities. The Wall Street Journal (12/8)

| | Time Warner, Cablevision report rise in VoIP subscribers
Two of the largest cable operators in the U.S. have passed significant milestones in their efforts to expand into telephone services. Time Warner Cable expects to end the year with more than 200,000 customers for its Internet phone services. Cablevision says its VoIP service, called Optimum Voice, is adding 1,000 subscribers a day in the New York area and has passed the 250,000 customer mark. The Wall Street Journal (12/8)

| | Liberty Media in talks to sell News Corp. shares; eyes Sprint towers
Liberty Media, the investment group controlled by cable mogul John Malone, is negotiating to sell its stake in News Corp, Liberty's CEO said. Last month, Liberty Media announced plans to increase its holdings in News Corp., which triggered speculation of a takeover battle. AT&T's Government Solutions division won a contract to build and operate a secure, high-speed IP VPN network linking 1,000 locations in the U.S. and many more around the world to permit VoIP calling, video conferencing as well as providing fewer points of attack for potential hackers. AT&T will be subcontracting work on the system to Accenture, Lucent Technologies, BAE Systems, GTSI and SRA International. The growing popularity of online gaming is one of the biggest lures drawing consumers to broadband, but research by Sandvine suggests ISPs are behind the curve in maintaining the consistent, gap-free connections that devoted gamers require. Gaming does not yet take up a large portion of broadband traffic, but a recent spike in online competition in Microsoft's recently released "Halo 2" points to a trend in broadband game-playing. | | Nextel kicks off new emergency service
Nextel Communications will offer priority connections to government officials and law enforcement officers in times of emergency by routing specially authorized calls when circuits are congested.
