1. Cisco: New router will serve as foundation for new Internet

Cisco Systems touted its announcement today by saying it will "change the Internet" forever. The gear maker then introduced a router, the CRS-3, designed for large ISPs. The company asserted the router supports 12 times the traffic of current models and is much speedier as well. CEO John Chambers defended the hype, saying the CRS-3 will provide the backbone for next-generation video services, which he termed "the killer app." CNET (03/09)

3. AT&T triumphs: Time Warner Cable backs down from "free HD" claims

AT&T's complaint to the Council of Better Business Bureaus led Time Warner Cable to "curtail" putting the word "free" in its advertising to describe its HD video service as well as pull ads that assert AT&T's U-verse service requires a long-term contract. 4. RUS allots $255M in rural-broadband grants

U.S. Commerce Department officials on Thursday disclosed another series of broadband-stimulus grants, a $254.6 million allocation from the Rural Utilities Service for 22 projects in 18 states, all part of the stimulus program's first round of funding. 6. FCC wants USF fund to support broadband service

The FCC has included a proposal in its national broadband plan that would replace voice service with high-speed Internet access as the recipient of universal service funding. 9. Level 3 won rare carrier stimulus grant with pragmatism

With few telecom service providers applying for and winning federal stimulus grants, Level 3 Communications copped a $13.7 million award by submitting a practical "middle mile" plan for expanding an existing fiber-based network keyed to a solid business model, the company said in this profile.
