GAO: Overhaul E-rate program to stop fraud and abuse

The U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report calling for more audits of the federal E-rate program, to determine to what extent fraud and abuse have occurred in the $2.25 billion-a-year technology grants program. The FCC, which is charged with managing the E-rate program, agreed that better oversight is needed, but said it already is in the process of making improvements, including adding more audits.
