VeriSign likely to maintain .net domain control

VeriSign, which operates the .com and .net Internet domains, has effectively prevailed in a competitive bidding process to control .net, the fourth largest Internet domain and a ubiquitous part of Web culture. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees Internet address designations, announced it would begin negotiating a new contract with VeriSign, and will look to runner-up NeuStar to operate the .net domain only if a deal cannot be reached with VeriSign.
