Comcast leases 19,000 miles of fiber for VoIP, TV, data network

Comcast will lease 19,000 miles of fiber-optic lines from Level 3 Communications, as the cable company builds a nationwide network for TV, telephone and data services. Comcast puts the initial cost of the network, which will connect 95% of Comcast's cable systems, at $100 million over 20 years. In addition to enabling the creation of a long-distance voice and data network, the lines are expected to increase Comcast's VOD capabilities.
